How Using a Rock Can Make You Happier.

No, I’m not talking about feeling happier by bashing in your spouse’s head with a rock.

Feeling depressed? What if I told you that you could feel a little happier simply by adding one thing to your pocket?

One exercise I commonly do with clients is I give them a pebble.

I knew you’d be thrilled. Why a pebble? Because if you put a pebble in your pocket you can remember that which I am about to tell you.

Everytime you reach for change or your keys, you will either see or touch the pebble. AT THAT POINT, I want you to remember to think of ONE THING that you are grateful for.  I don’t care HOW grateful you are, as long as you ARE grateful for that one thing.  Notice how you feel after doing that.

I’ll tell you this much. It is a really simple technique, but a number of my clients whom I gave the pebble to bump into me on the street after we’ve ended therapy, and they tell me that they are still using the pebble, and that it is working to fight their depression. The reason why is because it breaks the cycle of negative thinking and give them breathing room to choose a more positive way of thinking.

Try it for a week and let me know what you think!
