Be careful what you take.

No, I am not a psychiatrist, so don’t take this as psychiatric advice.  In all things, consult with your doctor.

However, I can speak as someone who has worked with countless people on this drug.  Xanax is only supposed to be used for 8 weeks at most, with, in the case of anxiety disorders, a replacement by an SSRI (anti-anxiety/anti-depressant) medication or something similar.

I have seen countless people on this drug for far longer than 8 weeks.  At least half of the people I have seen who take this medication and are in my office have addiction issues with it.  It is especially bad for those who are on opiates (pain-killers) and the elderly.

Just be careful out there.  Talk to your doctor about alternatives before deciding whether or not to take this medication or others in its class.

Here’s more on it.

I have a prescription for Xanax. i take it on an “as needed” basis. i have done so for..two years? i think i have taken 12 pills. i suspect you mean longer that 8 weeks *continuously* as opposed to what one doctor tried to tell me, that because i had even HAD the prescription for that long i was an addict. he didnt shut up until i brought in the original two year old bottle of thirty half full

Yes, I meant continuously. Thanks for pointing that out. That doctor appears to have been a bit off in his diagnosis of you as an addict.
