First off, I want to wish you all a Happy Mother’s Day. I had a wonderful mother and have a great step-mother whom I affectionately also call “Mom”, as she has earned it over the years.
Not everyone who has a mother has a great experience, however. In my 20+ years of work as a social worker and psychotherapist, I have met my share of people who have had mothers who didn’t know what they were doing. I have met my share of people whose mothers weren’t there physically or emotionally.
Sometimes they feel like a motherless child, as the old spiritual goes (and Richie Havens sings here).
May those of you who have had this experience take some comfort in knowing that you aren’t alone–there are many of you who have had mothers whose humanity (or lack thereof) was all too present. May you find room eventually for forgiveness and understanding.
